RWENZORI TREKKING UGANDA, MOUNTAINS CLIMBING SAFARI TO MARGHERITA PEAK

Day one:
Pick up from Entebbe Airport by your Mountain guide and chef who will do the briefing enroute to Kasese. Transfer either to Mityana, Mubende or Fort portal for lunch depending on the time of the day. On arrival in Kasese, the guide then checks you in at the Mountain Base hotel. He goes about with arranging for porters then restocking on supplies for the Rwenzori trekking Uganda Climb. Meals and overnight at the Hotel Margherita or at the Mountain Base.

Day Two:
Morning breakfast at the hotel then depart for the Uganda Wildlife Authority and the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services offices at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains. Your Rwenzori Trekking Uganda tour then starts from an altitude of about 1600 metres above sea level at Nyakalengija. With the assistance of your mountain guide and the climbing party of support staff, the allocation of porters, weighing of equipment and hire of some of the equipment you may have not have will be done here.

Then, the Rwenzori mountain hike starts following paths in the gardens which leads to the National park boundary. You will then ascend the Mountain past the Mobuku river which is nourished by the Mountain glaciers up in the Rwenzoris.We then walk through a forest of moss referred to as the “old man’s beard” and may see a couple of Monkeys as well as the beautiful Rwenzori turaco and starlins. Climb up to Nyabitaba where meals and overnight will be prepared by the mountain cook. The trek this day is approximately five to six hours.Overnight at the Nyabitaba Mountain Hut at 2650metres.

Day Three:
Breakfast early from the Nyabitaba hut, then porters load up and move ahead of the hiking party. The climb gets us ascending through the Kurt Shaffer Bridge which crosses the River Mobuku up in the Mountains. Thereafter, climb through sparse mountain vegetation. We climb through an easier hike which graduates into a steep climb after a couple of hours. Thereafter, the Cook will provide lunch after the rocky outcrops in the Nyamileju moorland which is characterized by groundsels and giant lobelia. We transit through the muddy bog following the River Mobuku, on this stretch, you may have glimpses of the snow capped Elena and Margherita peaks. Later, hike up to the John Matte Hut where we dinner will be served before overnight. John Matte Hut is located at around 3.414 metres and the walk from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte takes about 6 hours.

Day four:
After breakfast at the John Matte Hut, the rwenzori trekking Uganda climb veers through the challenging bog. Thereafter, crossing the Bujuku River into the lower Bigo comprised of Marsh and Mountain tussocks in this grassland. Walk through the upper Bigo bog then head to towards the Lake Bujuku to start the Alpine Zone where only a few plants can be seen. Trekking through the cooking pot, with Mount Stanley, Speke and Mount Baker head to your overnight accommodation at the Bujuku Hut(3977) Hut.

Day five:
Morning Breakfast at Bujuku hut then ascend on the trail that leads up through an area of giant groundsels. You will then climb over a makeshift metallic ladder into the Scott Elliot Pass. Take a steep climb towards the Elena trail and proceed to your base from which the Margherita Peak will be climbed. At this point, the provided water from boiling the ice or supplied by porters the start of the climb. Temperatures fall below freezing point at this hut located in the clouds. Meals and overnight at Elena Hut(4541m)-

Day six:
Early teas, coffees and snack before wking up before sunrise. Climb through the snow to catch the rising sun on the glaciers. It is advisable to wear your snow goggles or polarized sunglasses as you hike up through the snow. The Mountain guides meanwhile assist with ice hacking, rope tethering and guiding to the highest peak on the Mountain. At the Margherita peak which is 5109meters above sea level, we will take pictures before starting the descent. Breakfast is served on the trail to the next hut near the lower Lake Kitandara Lakes at 3979metres. If weather conditions allow, then one can  see the Rwenzori Peaks and Glaciers of Mount Savoy. Meals and overnight at the Kitandara Hut 4,023m. –

Day seven:
Breakfast at camp and start the steep descent through some beautiful Mountain Vegetation. In this area, life springs back with birds singing and chirping, as well as enjoying beautiful views of the Congo. Walk through the Alpine moss and descend through the Bujongolo and Kabamba rock shelters. It is here that the first organized, scientific Climb of Rwenzoris was based when the Duke of the Abbruzzi expedition camped here in 1906. The descent takes about 5 to 6 hours to the Guy Yeoman Hut. Overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut with meals (3262m).

Day eight:
Morning breakfast and load up on the equipment. Later, the porters and the climbing party finally descends out of the Mountains. Trekking will be through a 6 hours walk that goes past the nearby Lake Mahoma and Nyabitaba and passes through the heather area and the Moss Zone. Finally, the final hut in the Rwenzori Mountains or you could exit all the way if you feel energetic. Meals and overnight at Nyabitaba hut(2650m).

Day nine:
Morning breakfast and descend on the last leg of the Rwenzori trip arriving at the Mountain base in Nyakalengija. The waiting safari vehicle and your safari guide will be on hand to pick you and transfer to Kampala. Eventually, to Entebbe for the return evening flight or an overnight stay.
