Description

Uganda Lion safari tour

Day one:      The Lion safari begins with an arrival at Entebbe, meet your safari guide for the briefing and check in formalities at the hotel in Kampala or Entebbe. Overnight hotel booked on a bed and breakfast basis. Finalize the departure time for the following day based on the traffic and most convenient route.

Day Two:     After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will be at the lobby to begin the morning transfer to the Murchison Falls National park. You have a stopover in Kafu before heading into the Murchison Falls National park. Lions are mostly active in the early mornings or late evening. This means, the activity this day is reserved for visiting the top of the Murchison falls. Alternatively spending time listening out for the calls and roars of the Lions.

We could however try out a short game drive before dinner to get to see if there is a possibility of some hunts close to the Lodge. With some of the most developed night vision, Lions are able to see at night as clearly as during the day and this is when most of the hunts usually take place. Later, proceed to your overnight accommodations at the Lodge or Tented camp at Murchison Falls.

Day Three:   Breakfast at the hotel and proceed to the Nile for the ferry crossing onto the northern bank. We will be driving into the Nile Delta area and will be scanning the wildlife viewing tracks for signs of the King of the Jungle. Lions attain sexual maturity at the age of 2 and at about 3 years are able to take over a pride of lionesses. A lion roars up to a distance of 6 miles, as a warning intimidate other lions encroaching on territory. Male lions help in taking down larger prey during hunts, but females do the hunting. Although lions occasionally take down hyenas during confrontations over meals, Hyenas are not a desirable diet.

Later, after the morning safari, you will either have a packed lunch, or will return to the lodge. In the afternoon, is another time on the Nile to see other animals that constitute part of lion diet. Cape buffalo, Uganda Kob, Bush buck, Oribi, warthog or Giant forest hog feed along the banks. The cruise returns through schools of Hippo, as well as sections of the Nile crocodile before docking back at Paraa. Later, take a short drive back to your overnight accommodations at Murchison Falls National park.

Day Four:     Breakfast early and begin the drive southwards through the Villages. In the past, vast areas of vast lion country were decimated with the increasing population. However, in the early 1950s, protected areas were gazetted into National parks when herdsmen lost most of their livestock to the epidemic of Rinderpest and had to abandon these areas.  We stop over in Hoima, before taking the long drive to the Queen Elizabeth National park. A sunset game drive in search of the lions is conducted at dusk by following signs of the overhead Vultures. If lucky this day, we may witness another lion hunt on the plains of the Kasenyi track or on the main Kasese  – Mbarara road. Later, proceeding to the overnight accommodations at Queen Elizabeth National park to have dinner.

Day Five:      Morning breakfast at the lodge and begin the morning lion safari on the plains of the Kazinga and Lake Kikorongo areas. Lions are color blind and do have issues hunting camouflaged wildlife during the day. They do resort to ambushing their prey from the vantage points comprised of thickets of Euphorbia candelabra.

The Uganda Kobs that are the resident prey are mostly hunted at the lekking grounds. During the kills, male lions eat first with the females feeding next and the cubs feeding last. A male Lion eats about 20kilograms of meat and the females about 5 kilos.    The life expectancy of Lions is about 15 years in the Wild, while those in captivity can live up to 30 years. In the afternoon, we take a cruise on the Kazinga Channel to observe other wildlife on the water. These include; Hippo, Water buck, Giant Forest hog and many others. Later, an en route game drive to spot other wildlife ends the lion tour at Queen Elizabeth National park in time for dinner and overnight at the Lodge of choice.

Day Five:      Early morning breakfast and depart to the Southern Part of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. The plains are usually teeming with wildlife which attracts large prides of Lion. These can be observed lazing around in the numerous fig trees in the mid mornings and early afternoons after hunting and feeding. The lions in this part of Africa tend to take up into the trees, as a way of avoiding bugs on the ground. Secondly, it is believed that the trees provide the needed shelter during the day’s heat. You may also visit the Hippo pool area to see multitudes of Hippo, as well as elephants. Later, proceed to your overnight accommodation following a picnic lunch on the plains. Dinner and the night stay at your accommodations at Queen Elizabeth National park.

Day six:         The morning after breakfast, the driver guide will transfer to Mbarara with picnic lunches. Later, a visit to the Uganda Equator before heading to the airport for the evening departure flight.
